Obituary

Erica Louise Tomsha
1984 - 2009

Erica Louise Tomsha, 25, of Fairbanks, passed on to her heavenly home Sept. 24, 2009, at Fairbanks Memorial Hospital because of flu complications and pneumonia during treatment for breast cancer, which she courageously battled for the past two and a half years. She was surrounded by her loving family and friends.

Erica was born on Jan. 7, 1984, in Fairbanks to Mark and Anita Tomsha. Erica was a wonderful daughter and sister to her four younger brothers and sisters. Her outgoing personality, zest for life and adventure attracted many friendships and travel opportunities.Erica spent much of her childhood on her family’s farm in Nenana. As Erica put it, “It was a time for bonding with family. A time of rest from modern conveniences … with days spent outside in the sun and dust, picking sticks, working on the tractors, building barns, and stacking hay, gravel pit swims to wash away the dirt and sweat of the day. Nights were spent feasting, and every night was a party.”

She graduated from Lathrop High School in 2002 and continued her education at University of Alaska Fairbanks after receiving a 4-H scholarship for leadership. After her high school graduation, she was selected to be an intern for Sen. Ted Stevens in Washington, D.C. With her interest in political science, she traveled with the 4-H Leadership Club to Washington D.C., Atlanta and Maine on exchange programs. She was a camp counselor for Twin Bears 4-H camp and volunteered regularly with the Special Olympics horseback riding program. After her time at UAF, she moved to Salt Lake City to further her education. She stayed there until her fiancé, Tony Bugni, was tragically killed in a construction accident.

Erica competed in many horse shows at the Tanana Valley Fairgrounds and around the state. An accomplished rider, she was hired to care for and train Grand Prix horses on the central California coast until she was diagnosed with cancer. She loved the time she spent in California and lived close to the beach where she and her riding buddies would take regular gallops with their horses. While living in the San Luis Obispo area, she met German Bertero, who became her steadfast, faithful companion and friend. He moved to Alaska to be with her and support her in this very difficult time.

She was happy to share her talents even after starting breast cancer treatments in Seattle. She worked with riders and their horses and gave numerous riding lessons while she lived there. After moving back to Fairbanks and continuing her treatment, she was lovingly supported by many friends here, including those in the horse riding community, among them, her childhood friend Chelsea (Moore) Datillo.

Erica recalled times when they were spending “every day together for weeks on end, riding our horses, exploring the woods. ... We would dream of a time when we would move out of our parents’ houses and live with our horses in the back yard.” Robin Davies and her daughter, Darcy Etcheverry, created a blog for updates about Erica’s treatment, and they made “Earrings for Erica,” a continuing fundraiser for Erica. Being with her family again, Erica would pitch in where ever she could, cooking wonderful meals, cleaning up and helping create great birthday parties and other family celebrations.

Erica will be sadly missed by all her family and friends. She had a vibrant and brave spirit, full of bright energy. She loved life. In her own words, she was “an Alaskan Girl!”Erica was preceded in death by her grandfather, Karl Carlson. Erica is survived by her companion, German Bertero; her father and mother, Mark and Anita; her brothers, Christopher and Tristan; her sisters, Rachel and Tori; grandfather Louis Tomsha; grandmothers, Betty Carlson and Margaret Burya; uncles, Kurt Carlson, Michael, Patrick and Eric Tomsha, Ron Roden; aunts, Janine Thibedeau and Barbara Johnson, Linda Griffith, Christy Roden and Kay Tomsha; cousins, SallyAnn, Allan, Andre, Lance Thibedeau; Amanda, Carl and Perry Johnson; Aaron, Ian, and Magic Wade; Gabriel Roden; Kim, Ryan, Arwen and Katie Tomsha; and Willow Tomsha.

There will be a celebration of Erica’s life at 3 p.m. Wednesday, Sept. 30, 2009, at First Presbyterian Church, Seventh and Cushman streets, which will be immediately followed by a potluck reception at the Tomsha family home, 1470 Westmoreland Ave., at 4 Mile Chena Hot Springs Road Please call 488-0293 or check the blog at ericatomsha.blogspot.com for directions or more information.

We lost a dear friend, daughter, and sister this morning. Erica has been in the hospital the past week, and she passed away this morning due to complications from the flu. We can all take comfort that she was with her best friend, Chelsea, when she passed peacefully in her sleep. Please keep her family in your thoughts and prayers as we all grieve this great loss.

I will post an update about services when I have more information.

Chelsea & Randi

Saturday Erica's friends honored her at the game day they participated in. Chelsea, Randi and horses looked great!
Erica was in the hospital over the weekend. She was short of breath and had a fever. They kept her for 2 days and she is now back at home. Her lung damage/inflamation is making it difficult for her to walk far without oxygen.

Despite this she remains incredibly strong and upbeat. She continues with weekly chemotherapy and is looking into other therapies not offered in Alaska.

Erica appreciates any contact from her friends and apologizes for not updating her blog more. The limited time she has on internet she is only having time to check her email. I'll try to write more, Robyn

April Update

I thought I'd give everyone an update, I don't think Erica has very reliable internet access. She went to Anchorage last week for her PET scan. She still has cancer in her right lung and in tissue around her sternum. Luckily, the growth of the cancer has slowed markedly. Erica is back on chemo as of last week. She is still suffering bouts of nausea and the source of that discomfort has not been identified.

Erica came out to our farm this past weekend and helped make earrings. We are almost out and needed to replenish the stocks. We came up with some really cool designs! Be looking for those around town.

Hope everyone is enjoying spring!

OK...never fear, Erica is out of the hospital once again! I've actually been out for a while, but i haven't been feeling well, (obviously, due to my lack of correspondence) but spring is quickly approaching, so hopefully that will give me some reason to get off my hinnie and outside...here's hoping...i am going to anchorage next week for the elusive PET scan...lets see if fate can keep me away this time...peace out for now...

I'm sorry it's been so long since I updated the News from Erica. Life is busy.

Erica had the surgery on the cyst and it was more extensive than they thought it would be. She has been on bedrest since the surgery while they irrigate and make sure she doesn't get an infection. She also continues to be in a lot of pain.

Darcy visited her the other day and thought she was getting better so hopefully soon she'll be able to get up and travel to Anchorage for the PET scan.

She continues to appreciate the phone calls & letters. I think it is hard for her to access internet.

On another note Earrings for Erica are continuing to be sold at Alaska Hair Cutting Company, Turtle Club, K-Bar-D and Music Mart. The extra money Erica receives from these sales help to pay for all the medical expenses not covered by her insurance. Thank you to those who purchase.

Erica is in the hospital and has been since Friday. She had terrible pain and was unable to move without extreme pain, so she went to the ER. The doctors found a cyst on her tail bone that had become infected. She is scheduled to have surgery tomorrow, and will hopefully be out by Tuesday, but we aren't sure. Erica said she is bored and would enjoy visits and phone calls. Her new cell phone number is at the top, but she still has her old phone too. Her room number is #251.

This may mean she can't go to Anchorage on Thursday, but it is still too soon to tell.

So, the last couple of weeks have been odd...not odd in the normal since i guess, but odd in the way i have been feeling...i have been throwing up a lot, which, for lack of a better word, is odd for me. My Dr. and i decided that a PET scan sooner than later is better, so i fly to Anchorage on March 12th, its a one day thing, so i will leave in the AM and be back that night. To fill any of you in on a PET scan, it basically shows the cancer...because cancer feeds on sugar, you have to fast for 12 hours prior, than right before the scan you drink a hideous tasting radio-active sugar concoction which lights up all the cancer...pretty cool huh? anyways....that's all for now, folks.

i just had another CT scan yesterday, and i got the results today...vast improvement! im very excited! but i still have at least 2 months of chemo left, i will probobly get a PET scan at the end of the 2 months....i have been doing well lately, feeling good and all...i wish more people would call me though:( anyways, just thought i would update everyone on the good news! peace out!

WOW, i just re-read my last comment....how depressed was i that day? jeeze louise...anyways, pains better, the physical therapy has really been helping i think...i only have pain now, maybe, we'll say, for the sake of arguement...half the time...and i think my cancer is taking a turn for the better...i dont want to get too excited, but i have another CAT scan in a couple weeks and depending on the outcome of that, i will go to anchorage and have a PET scan(thats the scan that lights up all the cancer in your entire body) and if that is clean...i can quit with the chemo already...now im not jumping up and down yet....ive been here before, and have been let down...so, im going to try to stay possitive, and by the grace of God i will be ok.on a lighter subject, it was my 25th birthday on Jan 7th, i had a very nice get together at my house with a few very close friends...it was perfect...i want to say thank you to everyone who made my day special....i love you all...well, so long for now...erica
